Someone distract me!

I’m realizing once again that there’s a reason I’m not a professional programmer: I’m not very good at it. Working on my archive script generator. The generator itself went just fine (so far), thanks to the friendly nature of PHP, but now I need to work out some Javascript details. Most of it is already done, since I’m stealing code from Andy’s template, but I want to have a “show four links/show all links” option that shows the four links nearest to the current page: if you are on the October page the links would be December, November, September and August, but if you are in the February page the links would be January, December, November and October. Shouldn’t be as hard as I’m making it.

Luckily, the three hour Blogger downtime with Error 210 and Error 104 provided a nice distraction, since my Error 104 troubleshooting guide ends by suggesting that you invite me to join your blog so I can find out what’s wrong. If I would have remembered the dread “Weekend of 210 and 104” (Ev.’s grandfather’s funeral, I think) while I was writing it, I would have put something in about first checking to see whether or not it was something affecting everyone (“check the recently updated list on the Blogger home page, and if everybody else is publishing, then …”). Just this once it was nice to know that a couple dozen people thought I could help them, but I’d rather not do that every time a Blogger server goes down.
